Secondary school students volunteer at Pasir Ris 21 to collaborate on Creation C.A.R.E art sculptures

At the beginning of April, student councillors of Hai Sing Catholic School (HSC) shared with their teachers their proposal to conduct a Values-in-Action (VIA) project, with a sincere desire to contribute meaningfully to the Pasir Ris community around their school. Thus, they reached out to Jasmyn, Principal of LOT Pasir Ris 21 (P21) to explore potential opportunities for collaboration. Jasmyn then shared about how they could come alongside the children to build the “tree” they were working on for the Creation C.A.R.E Art Showcase next week! The student leaders were delighted to hear that our school could provide them a cherished opportunity to engage with preschool children, and to contribute in small ways to the children's personal growth and development.

Thus, the student leaders came down to P21 to brainstorm and work with the kids on their artworks, and also did a short skit for them based on the book “Be A Tree”, which encourages us to consider every tree’s unique appearance, as well as its history, character and life. Using two large pieces of recycled cardboard as a base, everyone worked hard on creating the various elements from scratch. Some cut out strips of cardboard to mimic long branches, while others drew and coloured flowers and fruits on paper. Children also collected dry leaves from the ground outside to be used as decorations. Finally, they started to assemble the different materials on the crown of the 'tree', and made it 3D by bridging both sides with a used A4 copy paper box. Voila! Through their teamwork, the students and children pooled their talents and strengths together to produce something that they were all very proud of. The children appreciated having the "korkor's and 'jiejie's to direct them and receiving extra help on the more challenging tasks, while the students helped to translate ideas into action and problem-solve along the way.

"Through collaboration and communication with preschoolers, we have learnt to overcome generational challenges, fostering a positive attitude and confidence in ourselves. The project has proven to be an enriching leadership development experience, equipping us with the skills to connect with and guide younger children. My peers mentioned that they had managed to learn a lot and grow as a leader," shared one of the student leaders from HSC.

It was wonderful to have youths in the community connecting and interacting with our children and we look forward to more of such opportunities!
